Our passion for making and drinking Riesling is based partly on the wide variety of styles that this variety is capable of producing. That array of styles is a double edged sword for some, but we feel that by labelling our Rieslings true to type we can encourage the Riesling revolution. We are enamoured by the general characteristics of all great Riesling wines: purity, elegance and age-ability and feel that the growing conditions here in Marlborough allow Riesling to produce at its best – it really is an unsung hero variety for this part of the world. The high sunshine hours mean that we are able to achieve ripe, fruit concentration and the cooler night time temperatures mean that we retain the natural acidity that is the hallmark of this noble variety.

We had always been inspired by the great wines of the Mosel and when tasting the fruit from this block at Te Whare Ra, we thought that the flavour profile and acid balance, lent itself well to this medium-dry style of Riesling. We love the knife edge of tension in this style of wine – the perfect balance between the initial sweetness of the fruit and the lingering, chalky acidity.

Tasting Notes

This Riesling ‘M’ is designed from the “vineyard-in” in a medium-dry style and is dangerously drinkable. Lifted aromas of mandarin, pink grapefruit, and white peach follow onto vibrant, ripe flavours of the same with juicy lime with underlying slatey mineral notes. This wine is fine and soft with excellent fruit weight and concentration to counterbalance the mouth-watering acidity.

Nick Stock – 93 Points
It loses none of the elegant purity of apples and limes and twists gently to off-dry at the finish.

Bob Campbell MW – 93 Points
Quite a concentrated and weighty Riesling with tangy green apple, oyster shell mineral, lime zest and subtle white flower flavours. Moderate sweetness is balanced by reasonably assertive acidity to give an off-dry and lengthy finish.

Raymond Chan – 5 stars
The wine flows along a fine-textured line of fruit extract and light phenolic grip, leading to a textured, off-dry finish. This is an open, accessible medium Riesling with lime, lemon and honeysuckle flavours on palate with some fruit extract textures and soft acidity. Serve as an aperitif and mildly spicy cuisine over the next 4-5 years.

Cameron Douglas MS – 96 Points
Very attractive bouquet, pure, fruity, varietal and alluring. Aromas of white flowers, sweet lemon, crisp red apple, pear and quince. A core of minerality with a light saline note adds complexity. Off-dry on the palate with an immediate rush of fruit flavours and sweetness, immediately contrasted by a back bone of acidity and whisper of salinity. Flavours are persistent with mandarin and lime-flower now in the mix. Balanced, well-made and delicious. What’s not to like. Drink now and through 2025.

Sam Kim – 5 stars
This Riesling is ‘M’ for meticulous and magnificent; the sunny-sweet bouquet shows lemon zest, lime sorbet, blossom and nectarine characters, leading to a gorgeously expressed palate that is focused and lively. The wine is gracefully slim yet powerful and dazzling with mouth-watering fruit flavours and fine texture, superbly enhanced by elegant sweetness and exuberant acidity, finishing impressively long and seductive.
