2017 TWR Noble Riesling (375ml)

Te Whare Ra has an amazing history with dessert wine styles and we are very mindful of that, but vintage conditions do not always allow us to make one. Towards the latter part of the 2017 harvest a very special opportunity presented itself, which allowed us to take in some fruit that we had assessed as being suitable for a botrytis affected Riesling. The fruit for this amazing Botrytis Riesling came from the Kilravock Vineyard in Rapaura and was grown by our great friends Richard and Lisa Rose. Thanks to everyone’s hard work the resultant wine is pretty spectacular and carries on the 35+ year tradition of great dessert wines from Te Whare Ra.
Lifted aromas of honeysuckle, apricots, orange rind and manuka honey follow on to luscious flavours of ripe apricots, nectarines, and cumquat marmalade. This wine displays characteristic unctuous, botrytis influenced flavours which are balanced by a fine backbone of ripe acidity. This wine is finely structured with great length and persistence of flavour. This 2017 Noble Riesling is enjoyable to drink now and will also benefit from careful cellaring for 6-8 years.
Bob Campbell – 96 points
Very sweet, luscious dessert wine with honey, honeycomb, dried apricot, peach, mango and tropical fruit flavours. A delicious wine with enough acidity to avoid being cloying. Very pure botrytis influence.
Sam Kim – 95 points
This is outrageously unctuous and delicious; the opulent bouquet shows dried apricot, Manuka honey, lemon curd and orange marmalade characters, followed by a lavishly sweet palate that is mouthfilling and viscous. Undeniably sweet and luxurious, this is superbly structured by bright acidity, finishing impressively long and decadent.
Raymond Chan – 5 stars
Deep, golden-yellow colour with slight orange hues, lighter edged. The nose is softly fresh and densely packed with concentrated and opulent aromas of very ripe tropical and citrus fruits harmoniously entwined with nectar and honey, marmalade, crystallised fruits and some savoury musky botrytis elements. Very sweet to taste and distinctly unctuous with decadent flavours of ripe tropical fruit and citrus fruit, along with honey, nectar, crystallised fruits, figs and caramel, with an underlay of musky botrytis. This exudes opulence, with a rounded, plush mouthfeel on a fine line of underlying acidity. The wine carries smoothly to a long succulent finish of tropical fruits and honey. This is an opulent and decadent Noble Riesling with tropical and citrussy fruit, honey and nectar, marmalade, caramel and musk on an unctuous palate. Match with fruit and baked desserts, crème caramel and blue cheeses over the next 4 years.
